What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
