The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening appears as one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
