The most severe potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been detailed by experts, including a blistering 4C jump in average temperatures to a 2-metre increase in sea levels. An alternative projection foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact food production and energy needs.

Credible Extremes, Not Forecasts

These impacts, a number of which are connected to climate tipping points, are considered as improbable but plausible. The scientists stated that these projections plugged a hole in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts breaks down or if strong feedback loops such as the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in extreme and prolonged heatwaves and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is losing strength and losing stability due to climate change. The project was commissioned as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have cautioned that not enough attention was being paid to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

Official experts has said that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "inadequate" by some observers.

A national response noted: "The climate emergency is at the center of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and establishing itself as a clean energy superpower. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the effects."
