New Year Celebrants Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Forecasts
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, following last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the national forecaster.
Fireworks Under Open but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be cold, so warm wraps vital, said forecasters.
To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to allow extra time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.
The Mercury Set to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Health Warnings Activated
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this meant the weather was likely to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is absolutely key.
