British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
