Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his intention to back former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, Adams had publicly condemned the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new development, Adams reversed course, announcing he now plans to appear with the former governor in areas where he maintains strong support.
“I think that it is imperative to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how vital this election is,” Adams commented.
The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.
In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”
The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred right after a heated mayoral debate.
